Montpelier : The Capital City of Vermont - Jul 2015
=========================================
Imagine if an entire state is just one giant park and you share that park with just a handful of other people and the park is filled with green mountains, rolling hills, gentle meadows, ancient rock faces, lush valleys and pristine flowing rivers and the best part is when you run into people they greet you with a biggest smile. That is Vermont for you. It gets better. The most popular attraction in the state is a tour at an ice-cream factory. Live in a picturesque park and eat lots of ice-cream; sounds like that is the closest I can get to "utopia".
How do you build a capital city for such a stunningly beautiful state? By picking a breathtaking location to build it of course. No other state capital city has a grand entrance as Montpelier the Capital City of Vermont does. The drive up the Interstate 89 puts you on the north end of Green Mountains National Forest which is the central part of the state where the mountains, valleys and rivers all come together and each trying to outdo others in adding a touch of beauty to the place.
Named after the French town, the city of Montpelier does not replace what was out there when the city was built instead it blends into the surroundings almost becomes part of the nature that is all around it. When we were up there this past weekend the weather was ideal - lovely mild afternoon with sun playing catch-up breaking in and out of clouds. The city is very small; In fact you can walk from one end to the other under an hour. It is the smallest capital city in US. The Capitol State House is where most tourists stop at first because it is the first thing you notice when you descend on the town from uphill. You could then drive a few blocks east to the main street, park and take a leisurely walk around the town square. The endearing antique stores, cosy restaurants, bland government offices, alluring churches, old-fashioned inns and friendly locals are going to sweep you off your feet.
Most visitors that visit Montpelier also visit Burlington the largest city in Vermont further 40 miles north west of the capital. This time we have not had a chance to go up to Burlington which I think is not a bad thing at all because it gives me an excuse visit Vermont again.
